Quaity classy Chinese Cusine at Song Garden Song 颂苑

We are always in search of good Chinese cuisines and there can never be enough of them in our little island. Recently , we were treated to a elegantly presented and satisfying meal at Song Garden located at the 2nd level of Mercure Singapore Bugis Hotel. Taking up almost the entire 2nd level, Song Garden is decked in refined Chinese fittings and some of the walls are dressed in lovely paintings. High ceiling dinning area with lots of natural lighting in the day makes it bright and cheery to dine in. There are 7 private dinning rooms and one of them has a table that seats up to 25 pax !

Signature Roast Chicken on Bed of Beancurd Skin
 ($25++ half bird/ $50 whole bird)

This is a rather unique dish ! 

 The portion here is actually
roasted chicken skin( stretched and roasted to crispy perfection )
 with minced chicken meat . I almost thought it was peking duck or suckling pig :D
Best eaten with a slice of homemade pancake ( white pieces above ) and 
slather with some sweet sauce and lots of spring onions and beancurd skin  

Mentaiko Cod Fillet ($19.80++ per person)
One of my imagine a coating 
of menaiko atop the cod fillet.. heavently! 
Not only that, there is also dollop of caviar for a hint of saltiness

Braised Pre-Seared Vermicelli with Shredded Fish in Silken Egg White ($24++)
This tasted like what mothers will cook ..but better ! 
Somewhat looking like a risotto but is actually vermicelli. The bee hoon 
have been pan seared then braised with egg white and 
generous slivers of cod and a raw egg yolk for added richness.

Chilled Five-Spice Foie Gras with Blueberry Compote ($26.80++ per serving)
Never thought that Foie Gras can be paired with a fruity compote ! 
Being a foie gras lover, I enjoyed this flavored Foie Gras very much.
The compote is a good balance with the strong flavored and rich liver. 

Apart from all the delicious dishes above, Song Garden also 
serves a creamy and delectable soup. It was one of 
the highlights of our dinner that evening. 

Lobster with Pumpkin Purée in hot stone pot ( $28++ per person)
Served bubbling in a hot stone pot is this golden broth that is made up of lobster
 stock and thickened with shark cartilage and fish maw – both of which have 
dissolved after being slow cooked for 12 – 14 hours. 

Lamb Rack Stuffed with Diced Fish in feather light batter ($22++ per pax)
(This presetnation was for 6 pax )
This is the first time I had lamb rack that came with stuffing !
It is quite a treat I must say :) Lamb is tender and the stuffing makes it special 

Last but not least, we had a cooling fruity bowl for dessert 

With temperature at a scorching 31 degree C these days , this pretty and colorful bowl of fruity dessert is much desired for ! Besides the dragon fruit bowl 

with mango and strawberries , there's also almond jelly ,

 mango pudding and osmanthus jelly . Good as a last item for dinner :) 

I reckon i will be back for the dim sum !

四川豆花 Si Chuan Dou Hua celebrates its 6th anniversary

If you were to ask me , which Chinese restaurant would I recommend for a satisfying meal , then it just has to be 四川豆花 Si Chuan Dou Hua at Parkroyal Kitchener Hotel.

四川豆花 Si Chuan Dou Hua has just turned 6!!
Well known for their Sichuan and Cantonese dishes , Executive Chef Leung has specially designed a delightful 6 course meal that has a wide spread of dim sum , soups to some classic Cantonese dishes as well as a good spread of desserts ! Eat to your hearts content! This affordable set is available daily for lunch and dinner .

It is priced at $78++ for 2 pax, with a minimum of 4 to dine. Did I mentioned that Mr Toh and I held our wedding 👰🏼🤵🏼dinner at PARKROYAL ? Dinner last night has certainly brought back fond memories !

Now let's get on to what make up the 6 course !
First up is the { Art of Dim Sum } . And this course amazed us ! It's already a meal in its
Just look at the spread I have on my plate ! Abalone Siu Mai, Fragrant Yam Cake with Waxed Meat, Prawn Dumpling and that delicious Marinated Rice Noodles Roll with Shredded Duck. Don't mind if I just rub my happy belly !

There are gems to be found in the 2nd course
{ Combination of Four Delicacies } . One of the 4 delicacies is the Suckling pig !

Crispy and not cloying is this beauty here . Second to that would be the Chilled chicken in spicy bean paste.

Tender pieces of chicken soaked in mala bean paste sure got me hooked on this .

Soup is up next for the 3rd course . Simply full of collagen goodness in this nourishing soup.
{ Doubleboiled cartilage soup with fish maw }
Finished the entire bowl and wish there's seconds :p

How about some steamed fish next !
{ Hong Kong” Steamed Sliced Turbo Fish in Soy Sauce } . Very sweet and fresh were these slices . And agree that steam fish really brings out the freshness and sweetness of this fish !

{ Si Chuan Dou Hua‘s Signature Bean Curd Medley } show cases the homemade bean cuts cooked with minced meat and sauce . This would have gone so well with a bowl of rice :)

{ Fish Paste “Mee Sua” Soup in “Shun De” Style} is a comforting serving of special mee sua unlike the one we are use to having . This is more like bee hoon. The broth is slightly thick due to the use of fish paste and simmered for hours before it is served .

We simply have to finish off the meal with some desserts , shouldn't we ? And what's best about the dessert serving for this set is you can eat as much as you like ! It is dessert buffet style !

Here are some of my fav from the dessert spread . The Mala kou is certainly soft and has a layer of white sugar gao at the bottom.

Yes we were all bursting at the seams after all the food but yet we just had to make space for these sweet treats !

Do make space for the signature Dou hua . It is something you don't want to miss. Soft and silky , these are also made in house .

Royal Thai Tom Yam Hot Pot at Soi Thai Soi Nice

My other half , Mr Toh, can be quite a fussy foodie at times. He is considered lucky to be working in an area where he has plenty of good food to choose from !

Recently he has discovered Soi Thai Soi Nice and has been there 2-3 times for their lunch time set lunch specials .A main such as  Grilled chicken with rice  plus a drink is priced at an affordable $8.80.

Conveniently located just next to Ikea Alexandra , Soi Thai is on the 2nd level of Alexandra Central.

The kitchen is helm by Chef Worawong Phairat (Olay) from Bangkok and he has 19 years of experience under his belt.. The menu is as Thai as it can get with some slight tweaking .

I was quite pleased to have attended a tasting session hosted by Soi Thai just couple weeks back.

Here's one of the specialty- { Yum Kai Dhao }$6.80
Somewhat a salad with all the pickled cucumber
 and onions atop a fried egg. . Very addictive dish

Cannot stop at one ! These Moo Sam Chan Tord (Fried roasted pork belly) $9.80 
made me so happy just eating them ! Not too tough and the chili makes it better 

I would suggest u to try this ! { Hor Mok Ma Praw Talay } 
 (Steamed egg and otah stir fried with prawns and seafood, served in coconut shell) $12.80. 
Ours is all emptied out from the shell and mixed with rice . Heavenly !! 👍🏼

This pot of seafood goodness uses in-house Tom Yam Soup base

and it is good for 4 persons ($68.80) 

This comes nicely arranged this way ..loaded with crayfish,
veggie, mussels, and also sio bak!

 Pot will be filled with Tom yam broth
Immerse the food into the soup and bring it to a boil

We ended the night with 3 desserts !  How can we not have desserts at a Thai restaurant right ! 

Kao Niao I-Team }
(Coconut ice cream, sticky rice with corn flakes in palm sugar syrup) $5.80
The sticky rice is freshly cook daily using a special item 
that the chef has been using in Thailand. 
I must say it is THE BEST cooked sticky rice ever.
The rice is well cooked and no uncook bits at all.
Soft and tender ..such a joy eating this.

Can't say no to Mango Sticky Rice ! $5.80

I - Team (Coconut ice cream with corn flakes in palm sugar syrup) $3.80
This is pretty much same as the first dessert except without the rice
Good for those who just wants the coconut ice cream.
Some of us do not take very well to glutinous rice

I will come back for more of the egg salad, Tom Yam hot pot and the fried sio bak! 
Overall we love the food here and prices are quite affordable

The Tohs at Gudetama Cafe Singapore

 With quite a few Asian countries having their own Gudetama cafes, we finally have one that arrived at our shores late last year ! The Tohs finally went to pay the lazy egg a visit last week.
We were there on a week day after work around 6 pm. There isn't any queue and the place wasn't packed. We just went in and asked for a nice egg shaped booth seat. :) My advice is not to go at peak hours like lunch or dinner times. The queue started to form around 6.45pm.
I love how spacious the café is .. not as cramp as some places. The bright colors is definitely inviting and cheery . Kids would love it.

however, prices are definitely on the high side

What we ordered

 {"Rib" I don't care } is a steak with creamy
mushroom sauce and a side of mix veggie and topped with
mashed potato ( in gudetama form )
Decent in taste but food and drinks are generally expensive
Straw-Very “Lazy” beverage is a lychee based drink ..quite refreshing
This seafood in broth and rice is mine.
Love the slightly spicy broth.. Good amount of seafood

I wouldn't mind coming back again , but prob. be sharing a main and drink this time
so that I can go else where for more food  !

Hawker Chan Hongkong Soya Sauce Chicken

Soya sauce chicken has always been one of my favorite dish. The only one I really fancy would be the one I have eaten for years ( Geylang Bahru Hawker Center) . After seeing a foodie friend making so many postings on instagram of the 1 star Michelin award wining soya sauce chicken, I just simply have to try it for myself . 

There are currently two outlets for Hawker Chan's award winning chicken dishes, The original stall is located at Chinatown Food Complex while the few months old new outlet is just across the street.

We were there on a Saturday morning around 10.45 am. There wasn't a visible queue outside the shop , however, the shop was already packed with hungry foodies digging into their noodles and chicken.

So here are what we had that day for 3 guys and 2 ladies.

1 whole chicken ( $23)  , 3 roast platter ($10)  , 1 serving of tao gay ( bean sprout )($3+)  , plain noodles x4 ($1.50 x4 ) and one serving of hor fun with chicken( $4.50)  came up to $48+.
We had so much food that it filled 2 entire tables 😂😂. It was quite an epic sight to behold.

meat is very tender and soft, even the breast meat is rather succulent.

 Decent tasting but not something to die for 
char siew isn't too fatty

but not the best char siew ..

Most people like the noodles, but I much prefer the kway tiao version

The renowned soya sauce chicken is indeed tender ..definitely deserving the star!
 But the taste of the noodles is less than perfect ..
Mix it up well with the sauce or else suffer the yucky yellow noodles "gee" taste 

I wouldn't mind visiting Hawker Chan again should I be around the area
and if the queue is short ! :D
